Call Settings

eChat gives you control over your audio and video configuration during calls, so you can tailor the experience to your setup and environment.

Accessing call settings

You can adjust call settings during an active call:
  1. On the call screen, tap the settings icon (⚙️) in the control bar.
  2. The call settings panel will open as an overlay.
You can also configure some settings before accepting a call in the incoming call screen.

Audio settings

Echo cancellation

Prevents your speaker output from being picked up by your microphone and sent back to the other person as an echo.
  • Recommended: Keep this on unless you’re using professional studio headphones/monitors.

Noise suppression

Filters out ambient background sounds — fan noise, keyboard clicks, TV in the background, etc.
  • Recommended: Keep this on for most environments.

Auto gain control

Automatically adjusts your microphone sensitivity so your voice stays at a consistent volume even as you move.
  • Recommended: Keep this on unless you’re using a dedicated microphone with its own gain control.

Video settings

Camera on/off

Toggle your camera before or during the call using the camera icon in the control bar.
  • Turn camera off if you need a break from being on screen, or if you have a poor internet connection (no camera = less bandwidth used).

Choosing audio/video devices

If you have multiple microphones, speakers, or cameras connected to your device, eChat will use your system default. To change the active device:
  • Open Call Settings during the call.
  • Use the dropdown menus to select your preferred microphone and speaker.
Device selection options are available on desktop browsers. On mobile, eChat uses the device’s front/rear camera and built-in microphone by default.

Pre-call settings

When you receive an incoming call, you can:
  • Toggle your microphone on or off before answering.
  • Toggle your camera on or off before answering.
This gives you a moment to prepare before the other person sees or hears you.

Troubleshooting call quality

Microphone and camera permissions

eChat needs permission to access your microphone and camera for calls. If you’re having trouble:
  1. Click the lock icon (🔒) or info icon (ℹ) in your browser’s address bar.
  2. Set Microphone to Allow.
  3. Set Camera to Allow (for video calls).
  4. Reload the page if prompted.

If you’re in a noisy environment and can’t use headphones, try keeping noise suppression on and muting yourself when you’re not actively speaking — this prevents your background noise from disrupting the call for everyone.
