Making Calls

eChat supports high-quality audio and video calls directly from any conversation. Calls use WebRTC for a direct, peer-to-peer connection — low-latency and high quality.

Starting a call

You can start a call directly from a conversation:
  1. Open a DM or group conversation.
  2. Tap the phone icon (📞) for an audio call, or the video icon (📹) for a video call — both are in the top-right corner of the conversation header.
  3. The call screen opens and the other person’s device will ring.

Receiving a call

When someone calls you:
  1. An incoming call notification appears on your screen with the caller’s name and profile photo.
  2. You’ll hear the ringtone sound (if notifications and sound are enabled).
  3. Before answering, you can toggle your microphone and camera on or off using the controls in the call notification.
  4. Tap Accept (green button) to join the call, or Decline (red button) to reject it.
If eChat is closed or in the background, an incoming call will trigger a push notification if you have them enabled. Tap the notification to open the app and answer.

During a call

Once connected, you’ll see the call screen with:

Audio quality features

eChat’s calls include several built-in audio quality improvements:
  • Echo cancellation — Prevents your speaker audio from feeding back into your mic.
  • Noise suppression — Filters out background noise (fans, keyboard clicks, etc.).
  • Auto gain control — Keeps your voice at a consistent volume even if you move around.
These are enabled by default. You can toggle them in call settings during the call.

Call status indicators

Ending a call

Tap the red end call button to leave the call. Both parties will hear a brief call-ended sound. If the other person ends the call first, the call screen will close automatically.

Call history

Your recent calls are not currently shown in a separate call log, but you can find past call conversations in your chat list — calls are initiated from and tied to a conversation.
For the best call quality, use a wired headset or earphones with a built-in microphone, and make sure you have a stable internet connection (Wi-Fi preferred for video).
