Privacy & Security

eChat is built with privacy in mind. Here’s an overview of the current privacy controls available and what’s coming soon.

Current privacy features

Blocking users

If someone is bothering you or you no longer want to receive messages from them, you can block them:
  1. Open a conversation with the person.
  2. Tap their name or the info icon at the top.
  3. In the Conversation Info panel, tap Block User.
  4. Confirm the action.
Once blocked:
  • They cannot send you messages.
  • They cannot call you.
  • You will not receive any notifications from them.
To unblock someone, go to their profile or the blocked users section in your settings.

Leaving conversations

You can leave any group chat or channel at any time:
  1. Open the Conversation Info panel.
  2. Tap Leave Conversation or Leave Group / Channel.
After leaving, you won’t receive any future messages from that conversation.

Your Chattercode & discoverability

Your Chattercode is not public, you control who you share it with. No one can find you on eChat without knowing your Chattercode or email address. Your email address is never shown to other users.

Profile visibility

Your display name and profile photo are visible to:
  • Anyone who has added you as a contact.
  • Anyone in a shared group or channel.
They are not visible to users who haven’t connected with you.

Coming soon: End-to-end encryption

eChat has end-to-end encryption (E2EE) on its roadmap. When implemented, messages will be encrypted on your device before being sent, and only the intended recipient(s) will be able to decrypt and read them — not even eChat’s servers will have access to the content. Additional planned privacy features include:
  • Disappearing messages — Set messages to automatically delete after a set time.
  • Read receipt controls — Choose whether others can see when you’ve read their messages.
  • Online status controls — Hide your “last seen” or online status from contacts.
  • Locked chats — Protect specific conversations with a PIN or biometric authentication.
  • Device management — View and revoke access to all devices signed into your account.
These features are in active development. Check back here for updates as they roll out.

Tips for staying safe on eChat

  • Only share your Chattercode with people you trust or want to connect with.
  • Use a strong, unique password for your eChat account.
  • Enable push notifications so you can respond quickly to suspicious login attempts or messages.
  • Block and report any user who sends you unsolicited or harmful messages.
  • Log out of eChat on shared or public devices after use.

If you ever receive a suspicious message or experience abuse on eChat, use the Block feature immediately and reach out to eChat support.
