Group Calls

eChat supports group audio and video calls so you can connect with multiple people at once — whether it’s a friend group hangout, a family catch-up, or a team standup.

Starting a group call

Group calls are started from group conversations:
  1. Open a group chat.
  2. Tap the phone icon (audio) or video icon (video) in the top-right corner of the conversation.
  3. All members of the group will receive an incoming call notification and can join.

Joining a group call in progress

If a group call is already happening in one of your conversations, you’ll see an active call banner in the group chat. Tap it to join the call mid-session.
You can join or leave a group call at any time — you don’t have to be there from the start.

The group call screen

The group call interface is designed to show everyone clearly:
  • Each participant has their own video tile (or avatar if camera is off).
  • Tiles are arranged in a responsive grid that adjusts as people join or leave.
  • Audio waveforms appear under active participants so you can see who’s talking even when video is off.
  • Your own video tile is shown so you can see what others see.

Participant list

During a group call, you can see a list of all connected participants:
  • Active speakers are highlighted.
  • Muted participants show a muted mic indicator.
  • Each participant’s display name and avatar are shown.

Leaving a group call

Tap the red end call button to leave. Unlike a 1-on-1 call, this only disconnects you — the group call continues for everyone else.

Tips for smooth group calls

  • Mute yourself when not talking — This reduces background noise for everyone else and improves call quality overall.
  • Use headphones — Prevents echo and helps you hear everyone clearly.
  • Stable connection matters — A wired or strong Wi-Fi connection gives the smoothest video. If your connection is weak, turning off your camera can improve the experience for you and others.
  • Find good lighting — If you’re on video, face a window or light source so others can see you clearly.
  • Keep your group call link accessible — Pin the group conversation so it’s easy to get back to quickly.

In large group calls, it helps to take turns speaking rather than talking over each other. Use the mute button generously — mute yourself when listening and unmute to speak.
