Managing Contacts

Your contacts are the people you can chat with on eChat. You can add anyone on the platform using their Chattercode or email address, even if you don’t have them saved in your phone’s contacts.

How contacts work

eChat keeps your contact list separate from your phone’s native address book. Your eChat contacts are people you’ve explicitly added — there’s no automatic syncing with your phone contacts, which gives you full control over your privacy.

Finding your own Chattercode

Your Chattercode is a unique 7-digit number assigned to your account. It’s the easiest way for others to find and add you on eChat. To find it:
  1. Go to the Home screen or Settings.
  2. Your Chattercode is displayed on your profile section.
Share your Chattercode with friends so they can add you.

Adding a contact by Chattercode

1

Go to the Home screen

Tap Home to see your contacts and the option to add someone new.
2

Tap 'Add Contact'

Tap the Add Contact button (the person+ icon or similar).
3

Enter their Chattercode

Type the 7-digit Chattercode of the person you want to add.
4

Confirm

Tap Add or Send Request. The contact will be added to your list.

Adding a contact by email

If you know someone’s email address:
1

Go to the Home screen

Tap Home to access the contact management area.
2

Tap 'Add Contact'

Tap the Add Contact option.
3

Switch to email search

If prompted, toggle to the email input method.
4

Enter their email

Type the person’s email address registered with eChat.
5

Confirm

Tap Add. eChat will look up the account and add them to your contacts.
You can only add someone by email if they have a registered eChat account with that email address.

Your contacts list

The Home screen shows your contacts list. From here you can:
  • See all your contacts in one place
  • Tap a contact to open a direct message conversation with them
  • Search your contacts by name

Starting a conversation with a contact

From the contacts list:
  1. Tap a contact’s name or avatar.
  2. This opens (or creates) a DM conversation with that person.
  3. Start typing to send your first message.

Blocking a contact

If you need to stop receiving messages from someone:
  1. Open a conversation with them.
  2. Tap their name or the info icon at the top.
  3. In the Conversation Info panel, select Block User.
Blocked users can no longer send you messages or call you.

Viewing contact profiles

Tap a contact’s name or avatar in any conversation to view their profile:
  • Display name
  • Profile photo
  • Verified/official badge (if applicable)

Verified accounts

Some accounts on eChat carry a verified badge indicating they are official or notable accounts. This badge helps you confirm you’re messaging the right person or organization.
Share your Chattercode as a QR code screenshot or paste it in a message to make it easy for friends to find and add you quickly.
